Govt will challenge restoration of licence to Lakshman’s college

The state government has decided to move Supreme Court against a Calcutta High Court order restoring the recognition of a medical college at Haldia, which is headed by former CPM MP Lakshman Seth.

The state government has decided to move Supreme Court against a Calcutta High Court order restoring the recognition of a medical college at Haldia, which is headed by former CPM MP Lakshman Seth.

Dr Susanta Banerjee,Director (Medical Education) said,“We will move the Supreme Court after appealing to the Division Bench of the High Court against the single-bench order to set aside withdrawal of approval of ICARE Medical College set up by Lakshman Seth.”

Last year, the Medical Council of India and West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) — the affiliating body of private medical colleges in the state — had cancelled the affiliation to the college for setting up a dental college at the same premises. The decision prompted the college authorities to move the high court.

Senior officials of WBUHS said the appeal in the High Court will be made by August 14,but keeping in mind the students’ future, the government would go slow on the legal process. Before going to the Supreme Court, nearly 88 students, who have enrolled in the college, will need to be shifted to another private college. That process will be started soon.

An official of the institute said a dental and medical college cannot run with the same infrastructure.
