As the news of the death spread,it led to an undeclared strike in Kurseong. Rai belonged to this area. Roshan Giri,GJM general secretary, said,“After we lost three young partymen during violence in Sibchu in February,we have lost one more young dedicated partyman. We will not tolerate this torture on our people.”

He said the clash took place because of provocative speeches of Subhash Ghising. “Despite our repeated requests to the government,Ghising returned to Darjeeling before the polls with active support from the CPM and the administration,” said Giri.
