The development comes days after Mamata met her Odisha counterpart Naveen Patnaik in Bhubaneswar and held discussion on the possibility of forming a non-BJP and non-Congreas coalition. (Express Photo)Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy on Friday met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to discuss the “present political situation in the country and the way forward to fight against the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls”.
The former Karnataka chief minister arrived in the city earlier in the day and reached Banerjee’s Kolkata residence around 5pm. Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee was also present in the meeting.
Sharing photos of the two leaders, the TMC said in a tweet, “Former CM of Karnataka and @JanataDal_S leader Shri @hd_kumaraswamy called upon Hon’ble CM Smt @MamataOfficial today, in Kalighat, Kolkata.”
The development comes days after Mamata met her Odisha counterpart Naveen Patnaik in Bhubaneswar and held discussion on the possibility of forming a non-BJP and non-Congreas coalition.
Earlier, Banerjee had met Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav in Kolkata and held similar talks with him. Sources said meetings with non-BJP and non-Congress leaders are part of her party’s efforts to stitch together an opposition unity with regional parties.
After his arrival in the city, Kumaraswamy dubbed the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as Lok Sabha MP as “political vendetta of the BJP”.
“It is a reflection of the present-day situation and the way the central government is behaving. Everybody knows it. Nobody is surprised about this,” he said.
In 2019, he had attended the meeting of opposition parties convened by Mamata Banerjee ahead of the Lok Sabha poll that year.
