Family attacked after cow enters neighbour’s field in Malda

Police have booked seven people, all neighbours of victim Saifa Bibi, but have failed to make any arrest as all are absconding, officers of Baishnabnagar police station said.

A group of people in Kaliachak’s Munnatola village in Malda Saturday beat up a woman and chopped her fingers after a cow owned by her had grazed their crops.

Police have booked seven people, all neighbours of victim Saifa Bibi, but have failed to make any arrest as all are absconding, officers of Baishnabnagar police station said.

The woman has named her neighbour Harun Sheikh in her complaint, alleging that he and his associates also attacked her son with a sickle when he had come to her rescue. Quoting from complaint, police said a cow owned by Saifa had entered into Harun’s fields and damaged some crops. The woman had later found the cow tied with one of its legs broken, police said.

The family brought back the cow but was attacked by Harun and his associates past midnight, police said, adding the attackers fled the scene when villagers turned up hearing the screams. The victims were rushed to Malda Medical College where they are undergoing treatment, police said.
