The two main opposition parties in West Bengal are at loggerheads after the Congress demanded that party leader Mohammad Sohrab be named the Leader of the Opposition,a post currently held by CPIM’s Suryakanta Mishra.

The Congress has written to the Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee to do the needful on the plea that it is the single largest opposition party in the state.

“We have got the requisite numbers and we should be granted the post of the Leader of the Opposition,’’ Sohrab, who is also the Congress Legislature Party leader, said.

However, the CPIM says the post should remain with the Left Front as the Left parties had contested the elections together. “The Congress was an alliance partner of the Trinamool Congress and they can not claim the status now,’’ Suryakanta Mishra said.

Of the total 62 Left Front members in the House,39 are from CPIM. The Congress has 40 MLAs.
