THE CBI on Wednesday arrested two more persons in connection with the murder of a BJP worker, Avijit Sarkar, in 2021 in post-poll violence. Sarkar, 35, was killed by a mob hours after the results of the West Bengal Assembly polls were announced on May 2 that year. The BJP had alleged that Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers were behind the death of Sarkar. The Calcutta High Court had ordered a CBI probe into several incidents of post poll-violence, especially in cases of death. According to a release issued by the CBI, the arrested have been identified as Sanjay Barik and Papiya Barik. The two were absconding after the incident happened in 2021. “The two accused are among those who were chargesheeted in a case related to the murder of Sarkar. The post-poll violence case was registered by CBI on the basis of allegations that Sarkar was assaulted by the supporters of a political party and succumbed to injuries. After investigation, a chargesheet was filed against 20 accused, including the said arrested accused. Both will be produced before the competent court,” the agency said in the statement.
