Reacting to the letter row between the state and Central governments,West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee on Thursday termed the reply by Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee as political and the letter from Union Home Minister P Chidambaram as constitutional.

The letter from Chidambaram is in keeping with the provision of the Constitution. But the relevant and pertinent issues of the letter have not been adequately and responsibly replied, said Sukhendu Sekhar Roy,the Congress spokesperson.

Roy said from the CMs letter its clear that the pertinent questions have been avoided and the use of political language was not expected from the CM who is also the Home Minister of the state.

Addressing a press conference at Bidhan Bhavan,Roy said that as per Article 355 of the Constitution it is the duty of the Union government to protect the state from external aggression and internal disturbances and for this purpose the Union government has sent paramilitary forces to the state.

The Congress tried to puncture holes in the CMs letter,pointing out that in his letter,Bhattacharjee has written that he has disarmed and demobilised all armed groups and this confirms the presence of armed groups in the state.

The CM has objected to the word harmad used to describe CPM cadres. While the CM has objected to the word harmad,life in Bengal is primitive, Roy said.

The party said while the CM has written only one Congress leader has been killed during the period mentioned in the letter,15 Congress workers have been killed during the same period.
