The BJP’s West Bengal unit on Tuesday gave the civic reception the state government hosted for President Droupadi Murmu in Kolkata a miss, claiming that party leaders were not invited to the event. Hitting out at the BJP for staying away from the reception, the Trinamool Congress accused the Opposition party of insulting the President and that it was caught lying.
The BJP said when Murmu was in the fray for the President’s post last year, it was the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC that fielded a candidate against her and felicitating her now was nothing but a “show-off”.
Leader of Opposition in Legislative Assembly and BJP legislator Suvendu Adhikari said in a tweet, “Those who queued up to vote against her would take the centre stage and hog the limelight at the felicitation event! Those who queued up to vote in her favour are snubbed by the WB Govt & aren’t invited. Compare the stance of @BJP4Bengal MLAs & the distasteful rant of TMC MLAs.”
However, the CM said during her speech that all political parties from the state were invited to attend the event.
At at a press conference in the evening, state minister Shashi Panja said, “The BJP wanted to disrupt the event with their lies. It has been caught lying. They held a press conference in Delhi saying they were not invited. But we have evidence that all elected leaders – including MPs and MLAs – from Bengal across all parties were invited to the event by the state government.”
“While some of them are saying that they have not received the invitation, others are saying that they received the invitation but will not attend it. What kind of discrepancy is this? We have tweeted and exposed how the anti-Bengal gang has reached Delhi again to deprive the state of its rights. They know that the President is coming to the state as per the schedule. Yet they left the state,” said Panja.
“Is this not sheer disrespect to the post of the President of India? This is not Trinamool’s civic reception. This was West Bengal’s civic reception. It is nothing but petty and negative politics. They have proved that for them politics is more important than the regard for the country’s highest office,” added the state minister.
