A senior officer said, "It is unusual that Aadhaar cards were found dumped here. The Aadhaar cards belong to different states, and how they ended up here is a mystery. We are investigating the matter."
Several Aadhaar cards were found abandoned outside a park in Salt Lake in Kolkata Sunday morning amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in West Bengal.
Morning joggers noticed the Aadhaar cards lying on the side of the BA-CA playground. The cards had addresses from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra. The residents quickly informed the local police, and the Bidhannagar North police recovered the Aadhaar cards.
A senior officer said, “It is unusual that Aadhaar cards were found dumped here. The Aadhaar cards belong to different states, and how they ended up here is a mystery. We are investigating the matter.”
Speaking to The Indian Express, one of the morning walkers, Moushumi Ghosh, said, “I go for walks every morning. I saw some Aadhaar cards lying on the roadside. This has never happened before. Probably due to the SIR, people may have dumped the cards.”
Another eyewitness, Protima Mondol, said, “I bring my son here every Sunday after cricket coaching. I saw some Aadhaar cards dumped here. The police came and picked up the cards and then left.”
According to the police, they are reviewing the CCTV footage for any clues. They will also be calling the numbers on the cards to determine whether the cards were genuinely lost or fake.
Earlier this month, hundreds of Aadhaar cards were found dumped in a pond in the Purbasthali area of the East Burdwan district, sparking a major political controversy. The cards were found during routine cleaning of the pond in Lalitpur village. Residents discovered a heavy sack and, upon opening it, they found it filled with hundreds of Aadhaar cards.
Most addresses on the recovered cards were reportedly linked to the local Pila and Hamidpur areas, while some villagers claimed that the names did not belong to the locals.
Now, after the latest discovery of discarded Aadhaar cards, the Opposition BJP has once again alleged efforts to manipulate electoral rolls and facilitate illegal infiltration.
West Bengal, BJP leader Rahul Sinha said, is the “headquarters for terrorists and infiltrators”.
“They enter from Bangladesh into West Bengal, and then they spread out. These are all fake cards. When SIR began, they realised that they would be caught, so they dumped the cards and ran away. Otherwise, why would cards from other states be found in our state? It is proven that West Bengal is the factory for manufacturing fake Aadhaar cards,” Sinha told The Indian Express.
