The police have today arrested three students of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) and two of SFI for indulging in violence on Thursday at Hajra crossing in south Kolkata – near the residence of Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Several students were injured in the clash and a student of Ashutosh College,Souvic Hajra has almost lost his vision. A senior police officer said that the SFI students were picked up and charged under Arms Act and Explosives Act,while the Trinamool students were arrested for attempt to murder.
Five of the arrested students were today produced in the Alipore Court and granted bail.
Jawed Shamim,Joint Commissioner of Police,headquarters,said: The charges were slapped against the students as per the complaints received. The police did not slap charges on their own. We have started investigating the matter.
Meanwhile,TMCP students led by senior party leader Firhad Hakim today tried to break the police barricade and enter the courtroom. A scuffle ensued as the police resisted their attempt.
Commissioner of Police Gautam Mohan Chakraborty said: We have arrested those students who were involved in the violence. We are maintaining a vigil to control further unrest in the colleges.
Anirban Hajra of the SFI,meanwhile,said: Our party members have been framed in the case. We started campaigning in the colleges against the privatisation of education sectors. The TMCP wants to stop our movement and that is why they are spreading violence in the colleges.
