More than 40 workers of the BJP’s youth wing were detained by the police on Friday after they allegedly broke barricades during a ‘Raj Bhavan Chalo Abhiyan’ in the city.

The Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) called for the rally to protest against the alleged rape and murder of a minor in Kaliaganj and the death of another man, who was allegedly killed by the police. The BJP workers demanded immediate punishment for the culprits in both the incidents.

The rally was taken out from state BJP headquarters in central Kolkata. However, police put up barricades at Dorina Crossing to prevent the BJP workers from progressing further  as Section 144 of CrPC is imposed in and around Raj Bhavan.

As party workers broke barricades, the police stopped them. BJP leaders then squatted on the road to protest against the police action. The police then removed the workers from the area. Over 40 were detained for their agitation. “We condemn the role of police in Kaliaganj. The TMC has turned them into party cadre. Instead of standing by the innocents they are shielding culprits,” said BJYM state president Indranil Khan.
