Two multi-storey buildings collapsed in Gangtok on Friday after heavy rains lashed the city in the evening.
The Army personnel started the rescue work after the building collapsed around 7 pm in Balwakhani area. As of now no casualty has been reported but a number of residents are feared to have been trapped under the collapsed buildings.
A senior state government official said,We are informed by the Army personnel that several people are trapped under the debris. Army people are trying to rescue them. The area has been cordoned off and we have sent ambulances and government relief to the spot to accelerate the rescue and relief process.
According to sources,one of the collapsed building,which reportedly belonged to a former minister of Sikkim, had several flats and a cinema hall while another building belonged to Karma Bhutia,uncle of eminent footballer Bhaichung Bhutia. This building housed an office of Sikkim United football team.
The collapse of one of the multi-storey buildings has tilted an adjoining building,putting it in risk,too,said a senior government official.
The buildings were old and their structure was damaged after Sundays earthquake. Moreover,a tremor hit the area on Thursday. Following heavy rains today,they collapsed. Army has been pressed into service and they are carrying out the rescue operations. However,we are yet to get any report of the casualty, said K S Tobgay,state information secretary.
He further said several buildings in the area have developed huge cracks and can prove to be hazardous.
After the buildings collapsed,the residents came out on the roads and and have set up make-shift tents on the roads.
