Rajasthan: SC/ST groups bat for higher representation

Leaders from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Rajasthan Sunday batted for increase in reservation, filling up of backlogs and withdrawal of cases registered during the Bharat Bandh in 2018 at a Mahapanchayat in Jaipur on Sunday.
As per the organisers, the two communities had a total of 12 main demands for the Centre and 26 demands from the state government.
The Mahapanchayat was disrupted briefly after organisers insisted that cabinet minister Govind Ram Meghwal keep his address short. “He (one of the organisers) has said I have to speak within two minutes. So I end my address here,” Meghwal said alleging disrespect. He then left the venue with fellow cabinet ministers Mamta Bhupesh, Bhajanlal Jatav and Tikaram Jully.

Convenor BL Arya said the increase in reservation is not proportional to the rise in population and accused SC/ST leaders in the government of not raising the demands of the community “strongly”. While Dr Ambedkar Memorial Welfare Society was the main organiser, 29 other groups supported event. However, the organisers didn’t invite the Chandra Shekhar Azad-led Azad Samaj Party.
