Financial fraud: Couple on the run for 6 years held from Rajasthan

The couple and a third accused were booked for cheating people to the tune of Rs 1.62 crore by promising returns on investments.

A couple, who has been absconding for six years after allegedly committing a financial fraud, was arrested by the Economic Offences Prevention branch of CID (crime) from Ajmer in Rajasthan on Saturday.

According to CID officials, Shreedeep Modi and his wife Rupal — residents of Himmatnagar in Sabarkantha district — who were arrested from Ajmer, were booked in 2016 along with Chhota Udepur resident Parth Modi, for cheating people to the tune of Rs 1.62 crore by promising returns on investments.

According to a release from CID, the three opened a company by the name of Sayona Super Gold Private Ltd in Kailashnagar, Sector 22 of Gandhinagar, in Sankheda of Chhota Udepur and Idar in Sabarkantha, promising investors a return of one-and-half-time in six months and double returns in a year, but absconded with their money.

The couple was caught from Aravalli apartment near Janana Hospital in Ajmer late Saturday based on a tip-off and were brought to CID crime Gandhinagar for further investigation.

According to investigating officer RD Taral at the EOP branch, “Parth was caught in 2021. The couple was taken on three days remand on Sunday.”

All three have been booked under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant, or by banker, merchant or agent), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 465 (forgery), 467(forgery of valuable security, will, etc), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC and various sections of The Gujarat Protection Interest of Depositors Act 2003, Prize Chits and Money Circulation Scheme Act.
