One dead, two missing in Telangana floods; hundreds evacuated

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Medak, Kamareddy, Nirmal, Nizamabad and Siddipet districts. Another 15 districts are on orange alert and the rest, including Hyderabad, are on yellow alert. 

Telangana’s flood-battered Kamareddy and Medak districts remained under constant vigil for the second consecutive day Thursday following heavy and incessant rains. The rain claimed two lives in Kamareddy district.

Rain continued to batter the districts Thursday, with Argonda station at Rajampet mandal in Kamareddy receiving 44 cm. Some 23 locations — including 10 in Kamareddy, four in Nirmal, six in Medak and the remaining in Nizamabad and Siddipet — received more than 20 cm of rainfall. According to the state government: “This has been the heaviest downpour in such a short span in the last 50 years”.

A total of 20 State Disaster Response Force and National Disaster Response Force teams are deployed in these affected districts. In addition, about 100 Army personnel are engaged in rescue and relief in Medak district.

In Kamareddy district, where one person died of wall collapse, the SDRF evacuated 500 from flood-affected areas, Telangana government said in a statement.

Rail and road movements have been affected in the state. Railway track has caved at Rameshwarpally in Bhiknoor mandal and train movement is stopped until further orders. In Kamareddy town, the Housing Board Colony, GR Colony, Teachers Colony, Sarampally, ST Residential School areas are among the worst affected areas.

“Food and other essential supplies are being provided to the affected people,” the state government clarified in a statement. National Highway (NH44) has caved in at least three places and traffic is being diverted because of the same.

In Medak district, Haveli Ghanpur, Papannapet, Ramayampet, Shankarampet (A) and Nizampet are the worst-affected mandals.

“As many as 47 roads, 23 culverts or causeways and 15 bridges which are inundated have been blocked by barricading to prevent untoward incidents. In Medak at 16 places, tanks have breached and all the affected villages have been alerted and are under constant vigilance, the state government said. From the district, over 700 people were rescued. Two persons from Rajpet village namely Bestha Sathyam and Yada Goud while trying to cross Rajpet bridge were swept away due to heavy flow of Gandari Vagu. Railway track at shamnapur on Akkanpet–Ramayampet line was damaged and trains on this line have been cancelled,” the statement said.

In Rajana Sircilla district, due to the overflow from the Upper Manair dam at Narmala (V) Gambhiraopet Mandal five people are stranded on an island, with officials saying that the SDRF was attempting to rescue them. In Nirmal district, the areas of Nirmal rural, Laxmanchanda, Sarangpur, Soan, Naspur, G Kuntala and Nirmal town saw extremely heavy rainfall

From Nirmal town, around 250 families have been relocated to Divya Nagar, Shanti Nagar, Boiwada, and GNR Colony to nearby shelters.
