The Andhra Pradesh government Wednesday hiked the salaries of outsourced employees working on a contract basis in the electricity department, providing huge monetary relief to over 27,000 workers.

Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy announced a 37 per cent salary hike and insurance coverage for outsourced employees. The hike increases the employees’ salaries up to Rs 21,000 per month. People hired on contract or outsourced to work in government departments get a fixed sum as salary without any other benefits. The Andhra Pradesh Contract and Outsourced Employees Association’s joint action committee stated that the decision to provide group insurance apart from the salary hike is a big bonus.

The decision was formally announced through an order issued by the special chief secretary of the electricity department. “The move is set to positively impact approximately 27,000 outsourcing employees working within the electricity sector. This notable salary rise has propelled the income of these outsourcing employees to exceed Rs 21,000,” a statement said. The government has also mandated contract agencies to extend group insurance facilities to employees.

The move is expected to bring about a series of positive outcomes for outsourced employees within the power and other departments.

“The Andhra Pradesh government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of its workforce, as demonstrated by this latest decision, serves as a testament to its dedication to fostering growth, equity, and prosperity within the region,” CM Reddy said.

In January 2022, the government increased the salaries of all outsourced employees working in all government departments across three categories. The wages were increased to Rs 21,500 per month for employees like senior accountants, data processing officers etc.; to Rs 18,500 per month for category two employees like junior assistants, telephone operators, and data entry operators; to Rs 15,000 per month for employees like guards, cooks etc.

Last year, the government issued orders to establish Andhra Pradesh Corporation for Outsourcing Services (APCOS) to create a transparent, accountable and sustainable outsourcing ecosystem. It also considers regularising some employees working on a contract basis for over five years.
