Assam: Former Congress MLA Membor Gogoi dies

Gogoi did not contest the 2016 elections due to ill-health and his daughter-in-law contested as Congress candidate from the constituency but she lost the polls.

Former three-time Congress MLA Membor Gogoi died on Friday following old-age ailments in Assam’s Jorhat town, family sources said. He was 79 and is survived by three sons. His wife, Aimoni Gogoi who was a famed Bihu dancer and sister of former Chief Minister late Hiteswar Saikia, had pre-deceased him. Gogoi was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly for three consecutive terms since 2001 from Teok constituency.

Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has condoled the death of the senior Congress leader saying the party lost a sincere, honest and hardworking member who tried to uplift the condition of the poor and the backward people.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Ripun Bora also condoled Gogoi’s death.
