Balvant Jani, Chancellor of Dr Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya in Madhya Pradesh, Wednesday questioned the intentions of the renowned Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) asking if it was being organised “out of pure love for literature and to felicitate literary figures” or to bring together an ideology that is out to break the country and “pollute the atmosphere of the country”.
“There is the famous Jaipur Literary Festival. What is being done by this festival? Why is this festival being organised? Is it being organised only out of pure love for literature? Is it really organised for the felicitation of literary figures? Or on this occasion, the ideology, which is active to break the country with a negative approach, pollutes the atmosphere of the country by getting together?” Jani asked while delivering a speech at an award’s ceremony of the state-run Gujarat Sahitya Akademi’s (GSA) Sahitya Gaurav Puraskar organised at the auditorium of Gujarat Forensic Sciences University in Gandhinagar.
Uttar Pradesh Governor and ex-Chief Minister of Gujarat Anandiben Patel’s husband, Mafatlal Patel, was among the awardees.
At the same time, he hailed the efforts of GSA in propagating literature among various languages such as Urdu, Sindhi, Sanskrit, etc apart from Gujarati and cited the example of Girnar Sahitya Utsav held in March. “In such sick times, GSA has shown an example of how literature festivals should be held by organising Girnar Festival (Girnar Sahitya Utsav) in Junagadh,” Jani, who was the special guest at the function where Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel was also present, said.
Noted literary figures from Gujarat — Mohan Parmar, Harish Minashru, Mafatlal Patel, Pabu Gadhvi and Madankumar Anjariya – were conferred with Sahitya Gaurav Puraskar for the years 2021 and 2022 at the function.
