9 BJP corporators resign from Kalol municipality
The resignations have come as an embarrassment for the BJP that had recently snatched the Kalol taluka panchayat from the Congress, which had alleged that the BJP had misused police force to usurp power in the taluka panchayat.

In what seems to be a sign of infighting among the members of ruling BJP at Kalol municipality in Gandhinagar, nine BJP members resigned as corporators on Monday. The reason behind the resignations seems to be the appointment of a new chairman of the municipality’s Standing Committee.
According to sources in the party, the general board meeting of the Kalol municipality was held Monday in which BJP member from ward 10, Prakash Vargade, was appointed as the chairman of the Standing Committee.
Following this, nine BJP members resigned as corporators. The same nine BJP members had resigned as corporators in September as well after the appointment of the municipality’s new president – Shailesh Patel – following the completion of two-and-a-half-year tenure of the first president, Urvashi Patel. However, after being persuaded by the party, they had withdrawn their resignations.<Kalol municipality has 11 wards and 44 members. The general elections of the municipality were held in January 2021, in which BJP won 33 seats, Congress won 10 and one seat went to Bahujan Mukti Party.
Chetan Patel, one of the nine BJP leaders who resigned, told The Indian Express that he has resigned over the issue of incomplete works in his ward. He refused to elaborate further. When contacted, Shailesh Patel refused to speak on the issue.
Gandhinagar district president of BJP Anil Patel said, “The nine members are not happy with the appointment of Prakash Vargade as the new Standing Committee chairman. I have informed the party superiors about the resignations. Further decision will be taken as per the instructions from them.”
