Calling for more initiatives from the private sector to improve the employability of young Indians,TCS Vice-Chairman S Ramadorai on Tuesday said skill development is the need of the hour. Ramadorai, who is chairman of the National Skill Development Council (NSDC) and Adviser to the Prime Minister, inaugurated Mumbai’s first private employment exchange called Rozgar Kendra (employment exchange) on Tuesday,an initiative by south Mumbai Member of Parliament Milind Deora.

Ramadorai said,“To reap the benefits of our demographic dividend, skill development for youth employability is a critical task for our nation. However, strengthening the links between education, employable skills and jobs can work well both from the perspective of a young working population as well as a competitive advantage for the country.”

Ramadorai stressed on the need for such private employment exchanges and skill training centres in various constituencies and at the city level. He said,“If there are such employment solutions and training centres in various constituencies,it will create a big impact on the skill development effort on the national level.”

The Rozgar Kendra aims to address the issue of employability of Mumbai’s youth and act as a single window system for job seekers to get information on vacancies and to benefit from a 45-day skill-based training at subsidised fees. On the day of its inauguration,Rozkar Kendra claimed to have almost 1,000 job vacancies ranging from delivery boys to customer care executives, front desk receptionists, housekeeping professionals and marketing executives etc.

“So far,we are working on providing skill based training and employment to poor youth only in south Mumbai. We have already been able to train over 100 youth in this area and have managed to provide them placements too. However,we are also looking at expanding the initiative to other parts of the city and even in the state. For now,our target is to provide life-skills and jobs to at least 1,000 poor youths every year,” said Deora.
