Yamuna banks emptied,Sheila calls for calm

The rising waters of the Yamuna entered low-lying areas in some parts of Delhi on Saturday as the river crossed the danger mark. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit appealed to the public not to panic and said all precautionary measures were in place to meet any eventuality.

The Yamuna level rose to 206.70 m by 12.30 pm,1.87 m above the danger mark of 204.83 metres. Authorities said the water level in the river is expected to touch 206.85 metres.

Officials said people living in the low-lying areas have already been shifted to relief camps and other safer places. Seventy-four boats and 68 divers have been pressed into service for the evacuation. Over 100 personnel from National Disaster Response Force have been deployed to assist local authorities.

Some low-lying areas including Garhi Mandu,Usmanpur Pusta,Jagatpur Village and Shastri Nagar,have been inundated. Water also entered areas like Yamuna Vihar,Madanpur,Sonia Vihar,Nigambodh Ghat,Jaitpur,and Yamuna Bazar. Many people living along the river bank have moved out with their belongings.

Meanwhile,heavy showers lashed the city for the fourth consecutive day,resulting in waterlogging in several areas.The MCD central control room received a number of complaints relating to waterlogging,falling of trees from various parts of the city.

The rising Yamuna forced the Northern Railways to cancel 25 trains and divert 36 others. The trains diverted include Kalka Mail,Shaheed Express,Garib Nawaz Express,Awadh Assam Express,Shalimar Express and Brahmaputra Mail.

Youth feared drowned in Yamuna
A 21-year-old man was feared drowned in Yamuna when he was having a bath with his friends on Saturday afternoon. The incident took place in Geeta Colony around 3.30 PM when Deepak,the victim,was taking a bath in the river with his friends Hari Krishan and Subhash Kumar. Deepak and Kumar were trying to save Krishan who had slipped into the river. “Deepak was drowned when he was trying to rescue his friend,” a senior police official said. Five divers have been pressed into service but he has not been traced so far. PTI
