Woman’s murder staged as death in fire in Delhi’s Wazirabad, daughter-in-law held

“On Wednesday, a PCR call was received at Wazirabad police station regarding a house fire and a woman being trapped inside. Fire was on the first floor of the house and it was extinguished. A woman, identified as Nasrin (58), a resident of Wazirabad, was found with burn injuries. She was taken to hospital where she was declared dead,” the police said.

The house, the police said, was a ground plus two floor accommodation, where Nasrin lived with her three sons and a daughter-in-law: son Adnan on the ground floor, Salman with his pregnant wife Afarin on the second floor, and Rizwan, a teacher, on the first floor.

Police said that at the time of the incident only Nasrin and Afarin were present, while the others were at work.

“The circumstances appeared suspicious. Afarin gave inconsistent statements, initially alleging that 3–4 boys assaulted her and robbed her jewellery. Later, she alleged that Nasrin was hit with a hammer,” the police official said.

Crime team and FSL inspected the scene and found a blood-stained hammer along with a pungent smell of kerosene around the house.

“Post-mortem examination revealed multiple head injuries. The doctor confirmed these could have been caused by the recovered hammer. Accordingly, FIR under Section 103 of the BNS has been registered. Her daughter-in-law Aafrin has been arrested,” the police officer said.
