A mother and daughter, both widows, were found dead in their Laxmi Nagar flat on Monday. Police said their throats too were slit in a manner similar to the murders reported from Vivek Vihar in East Delhi on Monday morning.
According to police,Ramvati (70) and Rajni Devi (52) were living in the two-bedroom flat for over nine years. Police suspect robbery to be the motive behind the murders. The incident was reported when their domestic help came to their flat around 8 am and found them lying in a pool of blood in the drawing room.
Speaking to Newsline,Maushmi Banerjee,a neighbour, said,I spoke to Ramvati around 7 pm on Sunday. She told me that there was a water shortage in her house and asked me to give her a wake-up call and remind her to switch on the motor in the morning.
Banerjee said around 6 am on Monday, she rang the bell of Ramavatis flat but no one responded. I rang the bell but no one opened the door. It was time for my daughter to go to school and my husband had to go for work,so I got busy in the kitchen and did not check on them. I could hear the television from inside the flat,so I thought she must have woken up.
An hour later, their maid came running to my house screaming. She told me that both Ramvati and Rajni were lying in a pool of blood. I alerted our neighbours who came to check. They made a PCR call around 8 am.
There was not much to rob in their house, apart from an almirah, two beds, one refrigerator and a television set. But the rooms were ransacked. The entry appears to be friendly, a police officer said.
Police said Ramvatis daughter had called her around 8 pm on Sunday night to check on her. This means the murders took place either late night or early morning. We are questioning relatives and neighbours. We have registered a case of murder. We have sent the bodies for a post-mortem examination, the officer said.
