A 32-year-old woman was allegedly attacked by her in-laws in Southwest Delhi’s Sagarpur area on Monday. The woman, who sustained over 35 per cent burns, is suspected to have been attacked by either acid or kerosene, police said.
According to a senior police officer, a PCR call was made by the woman’s neighbours on Monday afternoon. The neighbours alleged that the victim, Neha Yadav, mother of two children, was often ill-treated by her in-laws and was recently thrown out of the house. They also alleged that they had to convince her in-laws to let her stay in the house.
Police said the victim was allegedly attacked by her sister-in-law and was rushed to hospital after she was heard shouting for help. After a PCR call was made, a team of police officers reached the hospital. Police said the victim was not in a state to give a statement.
“If it is a case of physical abuse by the in-laws, then it has to come forward in the statement of the victim. She has sustained 35 per cent burns and is recuperating. Her condition is said to be stable. We have informed her family members too,” a police officer said.
Meanwhile, residents of Sagarpur staged a protest outside the house of Neha’s in-laws, threatening to burn down their electronics shop. “They used to beat her up and not give her food. We have intervened several times to sort out the matter.
There are police complaints against them but still they kept harassing her. A few months ago, she was also given police protection. She has two children, which is why she cannot leave the house. Today, they tried to kill her. This has to stop,” a resident said.
Police were deployed in the area to control the crowd. “We are looking into the matter. In order to take any action, we need to record the statement of the victim,” a police officer said.
