What should a school do when it has to deal with a disaster, including a bomb threat? The Delhi Government’s Directorate of Education has told the Delhi High Court that it had a “zero-tolerance policy” with regards to safety in schools and in dealing with disasters “including bomb threats”.
In a status report filed on April 29, the DoE said that it had issued directions to schools to ensure safety and security measures are stepped up, which also outlines the role of the school in case a bomb threat is received.
Here is what the report said:
Add fencing
Remove unnecessary
items where explosives may be hidden
Separate entry/exit in school building
Identifying vulnerable areas such as poorly lit parking lots, parking lots too close to the school building and hard-to-monitor areas
Surveillance through CCTVs
Keep building layout ready and share with police, Fire Department, NDRF and rescue teams in case of emergency
Parents, students and the school staff be communicated about clear rules of acceptable behaviour. They should be briefed and sensitised about the legal ramifications and punitive provisions following making hoax bomb threat calls
On receipt of bomb threat:
Inform police immediately
Evacuate students to holding area in consultation with police
Custody of students should be handed over to the parents/ guardians after proper verification
