‘Only God knows what happened that day’: Gurgaon techie kills wife and dies by suicide, kin search for answers

The bodies of Ajay, 33, and 28-year-old Sweety, also a tech professional, were discovered after a friend from Bengaluru alerted the authorities upon receiving a purported video message from the engineer confessing to his wife's murder and his intention to end his own life, officers said.

On September 28, Delhi resident Deepak Gupta was enjoying his Sunday off as usual when he received a call around 4pm. It was his cousin Vinay Kumar Agrahari on the line. What Vinay told Deepak next was something he was not prepared for. Vinay’s brother Ajay Kumar and the latter’s wife Sweety Sharma, residents of Gurgaon, were dead. According to the police, Ajay, a software engineer, had allegedly strangled his wife to death before dying by suicide at their rented apartment at a housing complex in Sector 37D.

The bodies of Ajay, 33, and 28-year-old Sweety, also a tech professional, were discovered after a friend from Bengaluru alerted the authorities upon receiving a purported video message from the engineer confessing to his wife’s murder and his intention to end his own life, officers said.

Deepak said that Ajay has always been someone who preferred keeping to himself. “He was very studious and kept to himself. I got a call from Vinay, saying the video was being circulated and I should reach (Gurgaon) fast. I didn’t even know his address in Gurgaon or where he worked there. As for what happened between the husband and the wife that day, and over the years before that, is something only God knows.”

Though Deepak left for Gurgaon as soon as he got the call from Vinay, it took him two hours to reach Ajay’s flat.

“By the time I reached there, it was already too late. We could not save him,” says Deepak. Vinay arrived in Gurgaon the next day, on Monday.

Based on a complaint by Sweety’s brother Akash, an FIR under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 103(1) (punishment for murder) was registered at the Sector 10A police station for the purpose of a preliminary enquiry, given the gravity of the alleged offence, a police officer said. We will investigate the circumstances around the death by suicide as well, police added.

The postmortem of Ajay and Sweety’s bodies was carried out Tuesday by a medical board.

Ajay was originally from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh where his father works as an electrician. Sharma hailed from Asansol in West Bengal where her father runs a furniture business. Ajay and Sweety first met in 2021 while working at the same tech company in Gurgaon. They got married in 2023.
Police said they lived in Tower-7 of Millennia-1 society. Their bodies were found inside a room that had been locked from inside. Sweety’s body bore ligature marks on the neck, indicating that she was strangled, the police stated.

No suicide note was recovered, officers said, adding Kumar’s mobile phone and other devices have been seized for forensic examination. Deleted data, chat histories, and call records from his phone will be analysed, an officer added.

The incident came to light around 4 pm on Sunday when Kumar sent a video to a WhatsApp group of friends in which he purportedly confessed to killing his wife, apologised to those affected, and spoke about his plan to die by suicide. He also expressed regret over unfulfilled hopes of building a happy family with children.

Ajay’s Bengaluru-based friend informed Kumar’s relatives, who, in turn, contacted Sweety’s family in Delhi and alerted the police. Soon after, officers from the Sector 37 police station broke open the door of the apartment and found the bodies.

Sweety had last spoken to her mother around noon on Sunday. Her phone was later switched off.

According to the police, the couple had no children. The neighbours said they kept to themselves, with no reports of audible quarrels, police added.

Officers recorded statements from both the families, who said they were unaware of any marital discord.
