Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday unveiled a statue of Bhagat Singh at a park in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar to mark Shaheed Diwas. The commemorative event was attended by BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj, and MLA Satish Upadhyay, among others.
Addressing a gathering, the CM took a dig at the opposition AAP for questioning the BJP government’s “commitment to patriotism”, referring to the AAP’s protests over portraits at the CMO and accusations of removal of pictures of Bhagat Singh and Dr BR Ambedkar. In the first session of the 8th Legislative Assembly, AAP leaders last month had raised slogans against the BJP.
“They raised questions but they never said a word about repairing the statue of Bhagat Singh when it was broken earlier. Today, on the occasion of Shaheed Diwas, we have unveiled a new statue of Bhagat Singh because we truly honour and respect our national heroes,” said the CM.
A controversy erupted last month after the statue of Bhagat Singh was damaged in the same park in Malviya Nagar. At Sunday’s event, the CM further said, “It is a moment of pride and honour for me to unveil this new statue of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. It represents our genuine reverence and dedication towards our national heroes. Our government maintains the utmost respect for our nation’s brave sons and shall never forget their sacrifices.”
Gupta also said the Delhi government has issued directions to departments concerned and officials regarding the respectful maintenance of the national flag.
“Our national flag and statues of our nation’s distinguished heroes represent our illustrious history, struggle for independence and cultural heritage. Their dignified preservation constitutes not merely our obligation but serves as a wellspring of patriotic sentiment and inspiration for future generations. We bear the responsibility to honour these emblems,” the CM said.
She also reiterated that “Bhagat Singh’s vision encompassed an India where equitable rights would be extended to all citizens.”
“Presently, our nation is striving to realise this aspiration through PM Narendra Modi’s principle of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’. It is imperative that today’s youth draw inspiration from the ideological principles of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev, and actively participate in national development,” she said.
The CM also participated in a Shaheed Diwas event organised by Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra.
