Man and machine working in three shifts, tonnes of silt and hundreds of animal carcasses — the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has its work cut out after flooding, even as the water level rose again on Monday.

While the corporation has set up pumps to remove water at Rajghat, Neeli Chhatri Mandir, Monastery Market, Priyadar-shini Colony, and Yamuna Bazar, work to clear the areas of silt will have to be done manually for the most part. It said in a statement, “MCD has effectively drained floodwater from various sites, and road cleaning is underway… several embankments of drains and water sources have been fixed by the MCD team.”

On Monday, sanitation workers cleared 30.75 cubic metres of debris. The corporation has deployed six vehicles to clear drains.

The civic authority has not set a timetable for when their post-flood efforts would be done. “We are trying our best, all sanitation workers are working in three shifts round the clock in their respective zones. Silt is being removed from roads as and when the water is receding,” an MCD official said. No additional workforce has been deployed.
