Vijender,Dinesh Kumar miss baton relay at home town

Early in June this year, when the Commonwealth Baton Relay’s route was planned, the organisers had not included Beijing Olympic bronze medalist Vijender Singh’s hometown Bhiwani on the route. A last minute request by Singh had meant that the Organising committee made Bhiwani a stopover city. However on Monday,as the Baton relay passed through Bhiwani,Vijender and Dinesh Kumar, another Bhiwani native were conspicuous in their absence. The reason being that this time the organising committee had forgetten to invite Singh and Kumar for the relay.

“We were looking towards taking part in the Baton Relay since we had ourselves requested the Organising committee to make a stopover at Bhiwani. But we did not get an invite from the concerned officials. We had earlier planned to travel to Bhiwani after our practice and we even packed our things for the journey,so it’s quite disappointing” said Dinesh Kumar.

Meanwhile,Beijing Olympics quarter-finalist Akhil Kumar was at hometown Rohtak for the Baton Relay as he received the baton along with Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. The boxer, who will represent India in the bantom-weight (56 ) category, grew up in Rohtak,a city where his father worked as a jail warden. “It feels great to come to Rohtak and take part in the Baton Relay. It gives youngsters a chance to interact with us and it motivates them also. We had a very tight training schedule but since Rohtak is near Delhi,I made it a point of participating,” said Kumar. Meanwhile, the rest of the Indian boxing contingent trained at the Games Village on Monday and also went to Delhi University grounds for full strength training. The team worked with assistant coaches Kutappa and Jaidev Bisht for sparring and individual practice sessions. “We are also focusing on outdoor training. It forms a very important part in our training as we also train this way at NIS. We have a rest day on Tuesday but we will continue training at the village,” said Jai Bhagwan.
