A 42-year-old woman, who was driving an SUV — a Mahindra Thar — was arrested on Sunday, three days after a Class 8 student was crushed to death by her car in Delhi’s Vasant Kunj. She was, however, later released on bail, police said.
A police officer said that the woman had stepped out to buy groceries and was on her way to a shop in her car when the accident happened.
According to the police, the 13-year-old boy was on his bicycle when he was run over by the Thar, twice, on Thursday.
The boy was identified as Murshid, who was a resident of a jhuggi in Vasant Kunj Sector C.
Released on bail
An officer said that the vehicle is registered in the name of her husband and she has been released on bail.
“The accused, a housewife, was going to purchase some groceries. During questioning, she admitted to have committed the offence,” DCP (South West) Amit Goel said. The incident happened on the Mehrauli-Mahipalpur road — a little away from the lane where Murshid lived — opposite a petrol pump. The petrol pump has multiple cramped lanes housing jhuggis on either side of it.
