Three people died and eight were injured after the van they were travelling in allegedly hit a DTC bus in Northeast Delhi's Jyoti Nagar Thursday. Police said the van jumped the divider and rammed into the bus around 12.30 pm. The bus was going from Bhajanpura to Nand Nagri while the van was going in the opposite direction, said police. Two of the deceased have been identified as Savita (55) and Jitendra (25). Police said the third victim, a man aged around 30, hasn’t been identified yet and efforts are on to trace his family. Dr Joy Tirkey, DCP (Northeast), said 11 persons were travelling in the van, which was used as a private taxi. “All 11 were injured and rushed to a hospital. Three of them were declared dead on arrival. Few are critical and undergoing treatment,” he said. The driver of the van, Shiv Singh (35), is also injured and undergoing treatment. Savita’s family was also in the van. Police said her daughter Reena (42), son-in-law Nand Kishore (45) and her 14-year-old grandson are among those injured. A 25-year-old man, Nitesh, along with his two minor sisters, also sustained injuries. Another injured man has been identified as Manzoor Ansari (35). Savita’s family said they went to Bihar’s Muzaffarpur last week for a function and were returning from the railway station when the accident took place. “We lost our paternal grandmother last year and everyone was in Bihar for her death anniversary. Now, we lost our maternal grandmother. My parents and brother are still in the hospital. My brother is in the ICU and my father has a head injury. We are all very scared. I was at home when I received a call from police about the accident,” said Nipunj, Savita’s other grandson. Shiv’s family said he has sustained multiple injuries on his limbs and back. “He has been driving the taxi for the last two years. He has two sons and his wife died some time ago. I was home when I got a call about his accident. We don’t know what happened. The impact was such that the entire van got crushed.” .
