Uproar as MP opens Janak Setu in W Delhi

The fight between the Congress and BJP-led Municipal Corporation of Delhi intensified on Thursday when West Delhi MP Mahabal Mishra, alongwith people of the area, opened the single carriageway of Janak Setu.

The fight between the Congress and BJP-led Municipal Corporation of Delhi intensified on Thursday when West Delhi MP Mahabal Mishra, alongwith people of the area, opened the single carriageway of Janak Setu. The bridge had been closed for the last four months for repairs.

According to Mahabal Mishra, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi was waiting to get the single carriageway inaugurated by a VIP. “One side of Janak Setu was already repaired and the Central Building Research Institute (CBRI),Roorkie team had asked the MCD to open it. And it should have been opened three days ago but the MCD wanted it to be inaugurated by one of their leaders. Agitated by the politics of the civic body, people opened it,” Mishra said.

Meanwhile,Jagdish Mamgain,Chairman of the MCD Works Committee, accused Mishra of “playing with lives” of commuters.

“The CBRI team asked us to keep it closed till the repair work of single side carriageway is complete. They visited on Sunday. We were to open it on Monday as both carriageways are interconnected and we wanted the repaired carriageway to dry. We will approach the police to register a complaint,” Mamgain said.

The MCD officials went to Janak Setu in the afternoon and closed the carriageway but people removed the barricades again and started using it.

Mamgain said there was heavy congestion on the bridge because people were using it from both ends. “Till afternoon,Tilak Nagar to Delhi Cantonment commuters could use the Janak Setu’s single side and after 4 pm commuters from Delhi Cantonment to Tilak Nagar could use the bridge,” Mamgain said.

For the past four months, residents of West Delhi had a harrowing time commuting between West Delhi and the Cantonment area.
