Even as the Delhi Health Minister announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the family of Rajender Kumar who died from exposure to radioactive material, doctors at the Army Research and Referral Hospital said two of the victims will undergo bone marrow transplants later this month.
Both the patients scrap shop owner Deepak Jain and neighbour Ajay Jain have suffered irreversible damage and their bone marrows are severely suppressed. While they have responded to growth stimulators, both patients have low platelet and white blood cell counts, said Lt Gen Naresh Kumar.
The Army doctors said cross-donors for both patients have already been identified. Deepaks sister is a 100 per cent match. But their immune systems are compromised and a bone marrow transplant is not advisable at this stage. We want the patients to first recover from the burn injuries they have sustained. In one patients case we will be requiring grafts and once the infections have been controlled we will consider the bone marrow transplant, said Brigadier Velu Nair.
Meanwhile,Delhi Health Minister Kiran Walia said that besides the compensations,Rajenders widow Nandini will also get a government pension.
We have sanctioned a pension for Nandini and are exploring the possibility of providing contractual employment to next kin of the victim in any of the government hospitals, said Walia.
