Police said Sub Inspector (SI) Vijender received the information and a team comprising SI Sandeep and SI Rahul, led by Inspector Sanjay Gupta and Inspector Pawan, reached the spot. “The team spotted two suspicious men on a bike. When they were asked to stop, the pillion rider opened fire,” a Special Cell officer said, adding that they identified the man as Kartik.

“As the two tried to escape, the policemen fired in self-defence. One of the bullets hit Kartik’s left leg, causing him to lose control over the bike. Both were detained and the bike rider was identified as Kavish, who had recently joined the Boxer gang,” the officer said.

During questioning, the two allegedly told the police that Boxer had assigned two men – who were staying at a hotel in Mohali – to fire at a businessman in the city who had not paid Rs 10-crore extortion sought in July. On Thursday morning, Manoj Saharan (21) and Pawan Kumar (30) were arrested from the hotel, said Kushwaha.

Police said that Kartik used to work at a loan recovery firm until 2018, before he got into a tussle with Umed Sain, a student union leader in Rajasthan. “He, along with his friends, got into a fight with Sain. Thereafter, he came into contact with some gangsters and subsequently became a trusted henchman of Harry Boxer,” Kushwah said.

“Kartik would provide logistics and men to Boxer to carry out shootings and extortion… He also said that he has been involved in making extortion calls to two businessmen in Ganganagar in 2025, and sent Kavish to shoot at one of them in May after he failed to meet their demand,” he added.

He further said that Kartik has disclosed his role in the murder of Sanjay Verma, a tailoring tycoon popularly known as Punjab’s ‘kurta-pajama king’ and the owner of New Wear Well store at Abohar. “Moreover, extortion calls of Rs 30 crore made by Boxer to a prominent person of Ganganagar in June, and to another one in March, were both facilitated by Kartik,” Kushwah said.

Kavish, police said, had recently joined the gang, and his first task was to take part in a shooting incident in Rajasthan in May.

“Last February, Kavish gave his car to Kartik to deliver arms and ammunition for the gang members. During one such delivery, the vehicle was intercepted by Rajasthan Police and led to the recovery of arms. Kavish was also arrested,” Kushwah said, adding that through Kartik, Kavish came into contact with Boxer, and other gangsters like Rohit Godara and Aarzoo hiding abroad.
