The Gurgaon Police early Sunday morning nabbed two wanted men from Punjab, who allegedly belong to the notorious Davinder Bambiha gang, following a shootout. The two accused, Sumit Sharma (21) and Sukhmanjit (19), residents of Amritsar, were caught after being injured during an exchange of fire that began near Umripur village in Sector 62, late on Saturday. "Acting on intelligence that the accused were planning a major crime on Golf Course Extension Road, a joint team of Sector 39 and Sector 40 Crime Branches conducted a raid. The suspects, riding a motorcycle without a number plate, attempted to flee upon spotting the police. During the chase, the pillion rider fired at the police. The motorcycle crashed, and the accused fled on foot, continuing to shoot. The police, in self-defence, shot both men in the legs, apprehending them,” a police spokesperson said. Police recovered two pistols, two live cartridges, the motorcycle, and 11 empty cartridge shells (seven fired by the accused, four by the police) from the scene. A bullet struck ASI Abhilash’s bulletproof jacket, but no police personnel were injured. Police said Sumit is wanted in a 2025 Amritsar murder case and has six prior cases, including murder, attempt to murder, criminal intimidation, and Arms Act violations. Sukhmanjit is a proclaimed offender, police said. A case has been registered at Sector 65 police station for attempt to murder under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant provisions under the Arms Act due possession of illegal weapons. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and Scene of Crime teams inspected the site. Further investigation and legal proceedings are ongoing. The duo are currently undergoing treatment at the Sector 10 Civil Hospital, and will be formally arrested upon discharge. In October last year, days after a shooting outside a businessman’s home at Rani Bagh in Northwest Delhi, two members of the Bambiha gang who were allegedly behind the incident were arrested after a brief exchange of fire with Delhi Police Special Cell officers. The Bambiha gang is suspected to be an arch-rival of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. The inter-gang rivalry often led to gun violence in Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab, with the gangs fighting not only over protection money but also for supremacy over the Punjab music industry and kabaddi players. Davinder Bambiha, who allegedly ran an extortion racket in Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula, was killed in a police shootout in 2016. Kaushal Chaudhary, the current leader of the gang, is imprisoned at the Bhondsi jail in Gurgaon and facing over 40 criminal charges.
