Two security guards employed at Amity University’s Greater Noida campus were arrested on Wednesday by the Gautam Budh Nagar police for alleged drug peddling.
Station House Officer (Knowledge Park) Arvind Pathak said, “During routine checking in the area, police found two suspicious guards outside the college campus. On questioning and searching, we found that the accused, Santosh Singh, had 1.2 kg of cannabis with him. Authorities at Ecotech 3 police station seized 1.25 kg of cannabis from the second accused, Naveen Mishra. Both have been arrested and will be produced before a magistrate on Thursday.”
Police said an FIR under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has been filed at Knowledge Park police station against the accused.
According to police, the security guards allegedly obtained drugs from a local source and sold it to students of the university. Police are looking into the accused’s call records and contacts to trace the alleged buyers.
Police are also questioning Santosh and Naveen to ascertain details of the Noida-based private security agency that hired them.
Meanwhile, Amity University authorities have denied any direct association with the guards.
A university spokesperson said, “The guards were hired by a private security agency, which appointed them… Due diligence was done by them. We are not responsible for their actions outside the campus.”
The university has also denied any drug-related activity on campus. “The guards carried out the illicit activity while they were off-duty, for which the college cannot be held accountable,” the spokesperson said.
The arrest comes a day after the Gautam Budh Nagar police nabbed 29 alleged drug traffickers as part of an ongoing operation to bust illegal drug trade in the city.
