To ensure water supply for 24 new fountains and 1 lakh potted plants installed in areas under its jurisdiction as part of beautification efforts for the G20 Summit, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will be using treated water supplied by tankers.

According to an NDMC official, none of these fountains have a water connection. So, a tender was floated to hire a private firm that will manage their upkeep and water supply.

“Regular clean water and drinking water could not be used as it would be a waste of resources… The only way was getting tankers to provide treated water,” the official said.

As many as 35 tankers will be deployed to refill water at the fountains and water plants. Of these, 15 are hired from the private firm. Sources said the firm is tasked with providing tankers with drivers, helpers and fuel. The NDMC has allotted a sum of over Rs 2.82 crore for this.

NDMC vice-chairperson Satish Upadhyay said, “The water used in the fountains is being sourced from the four STPs that are managed by the NDMC. Each fountain requires 12,000 litres of water to function… 1,000 litres needs to be refilled daily.”

Besides, the Delhi Jal Board will also be providing treated water for these fountains.

Eleven fountains are within the Connaught Place division, and the remaining 13 are in areas like Sher Shah Road, Zakir Hussain Marg, Pandara Road, Akbar Road, KG Marg, Janpath, Sansad Marg, Teen Murti Marg, Rajaji Marg, Hyderabad House, Copernicus Marg, and Purana Qila Road.
