Delhi Metro opens toilets meant for people with disabilities to transgenders

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has said that transgender persons who wish to use gender-based toilets as per their self-identified gender can continue to do so

To guide transgenders to these toilets, bilingual signages (English and Hindi both), along with symbols for both categories -- 'Persons with Disability' and 'Transgenders' -- have been installed adjacent to these toilets. In a bid to provide a safe space for transgenders and prevent discrimination against them, the Delhi Metro has now opened up toilets meant for people with disabilities to transgenders as well, said a spokesperson of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

“To guide transgenders to these toilets, bilingual signages (in English & Hindi) have been installed along with symbols for both persons with disabilities as well as transgenders,” the spokesperson added. At present, Delhi Metro has 347 such separate toilets at stations across its network.

The DMRC said transgender persons who wish to use gender-based toilets as per their self-identified gender can continue to do so.

Section 22 of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, mandates adequate welfare measures for transgenders in all public buildings, including toilet facilities.
