AMONG THE many layers of security for the G20 Summit later this year will be 19 “markswomen” of the Delhi Police who have just completed a four-week specialised training session, conducted by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) at its training centre in Karera, Madhya Pradesh.

In a first, the Delhi Police decided to send these 19 women, all commandos with its Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit in Zamrudpur, for the “marksman” course.

The decision was taken by Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora when he visited the SWAT unit a few months ago.

“After joining the Delhi Police in 2018, I was initially working with the PCR unit. Then we were asked if we were willing to join SWAT. I joined the unit and went through several training sessions. But recently, I was sent for a four-week training session in Karera, along with 18 colleagues, which has improved my shooting skills,” said Nisha Chaudhary, 27.

Chaudhary is the eldest of three siblings, from a farmer family in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. “My father is a farmer. I never imagined that I would be performing such an important job one day. I have seen marksmen in movies, but now, we are going to be deployed in key locations during the G20 summit,” she said.

“It is a dream come true to work as a markswoman during such a prestigious event in our country. This training course was very useful and has increased my confidence,” said Kiran, a resident of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, who was the topper of the Delhi Police’s first batch of markswomen.

“We were trained for three months earlier too, but this course has polished our skills. Now, I am ready to give my 100 per cent,” said Sukhwanti, a resident of Hisar in Haryana.

Among the 19 women personnel, two were from Manipur and Assam.

The course started on June 19 and ended on July 15. “They were trained in the basic principles of firing as marksmen. One constable, Kiran, got first position by securing 95 per cent marks. Now, all 19 women are trained to hit a target of 4 cm from a distance of 100 yards,” said an officer.

“We selected 19 women SWAT commandos since they have more patience, and provided them training. They have been trained to use a rifle telescope,” said DCP (Special Cell and Swat Unit) Ingit Pratap Singh.

DIG Surinder Khatri, in charge of the ITBP training centre in Karera, conveyed to the Delhi Police headquarters that the women commandos maintained a high standard of discipline and took keen interest in training.
