With around 15,000 couples tying the knot on Akshay Tritiya, which happened to fall on Friday, wedding card shops, temples and farmhouses across the Capital witnessed heavy footfall over the last few weeks.
The situation on roads around farmhouses in South Delhi and Dwarka became especially bad on the day of the Akshay Tritiya, considered an auspicious day to get married. To alleviate the situation, additional Traffic Police personnel were deployed at areas such as Chhattarpur,Dwarka Link Road,Alipur Road,Punjabi Bagh,Rohtak Road,Mubarka Chowk,Sonepat,New Rohtak Road and several points on arterial routes such as Outer Ring Road.
Satyendra Garg,Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic),told Newsline,We have deployed additional police personnel in areas such as Chhattarpur,Dwarka Link Road,Alipur Road and Mubarak Chowk, which are likely to become congested due to the large number of motels and farmhouse located there. Even traffic-light cycles were adjusted with accordance to the density of the traffic to prevent traffic jams. However, with as many as 15,000 weddings occurring on a single day,it was just not possible to completely prevent congestion on the roads.
A number of guests at farmhouses had a tough time returning home as the Traffic Police had towed away their vehicles, which were parked on main roads and service roads.
We stationed several cranes at the sites to tow away vehicles parked on main roads and service roads. Farmhouses with proper licenses are required to have adequate parking spacing inside the premises and, according to the rules,no vehicles should be parked outside, said Garg.
As it is not possible to tow away all illegally parked vehicles,we are also videographing many of them so their owners can be challaned later. We will also inform the authorities concerned about farmhouses that do not have proper parking space,so their licences can be revoked, he added.
