Traffic cops clamp down on offenders

In a move to prevent parking of vehicles at ‘No Parking’ zones, the Faridabad police have for the very first time introduced the concept of wheel-clamps.

On Monday, the first day of its implementation, the Faridabad traffic police issued 35 challans, mainly against cars parked in an incorrect manner.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Raj Kumar said: “The clamp is put on any one of the four wheels to prevent the vehicle from moving. The clamps are tamper-proof and one cannot break the lock to free the vehicle. In case the driver tries to move the vehicle, pins attached to the clamp will deflate the tyre it is clamped on.”

The challans issued are in the form of a notice stuck on cars’ window panes and carry the details of where the car owner can pay the penalty amount and free his vehicle.

“We make sure that the procedure does not cause too much discomfort to the people and write the number of the area in charge, usually the nearest police station,” ACP Kumar said.

For now,the Faridabad police have acquired 20 clamps and are using them on trial basis. “We will still tow vehicles parked in an incorrect fashion on major roads and national highways to avoid traffic snarls. The clamps are for those cars which have been parked on roads inside colonies and busy market areas,” an officer said.

The traffic police started the drive from the district court area in Sector 12 at 11 am today. The offenders were asked to pay the fine at the court complex between 10 am and 4 pm and at the Sector 15 police station between 4 pm and 8 pm.

The clamps also mean less damage to vehicles as they will not be towed away.

“Within two hours of us starting with the drive, there was a marked difference as owners were no longer leaving their cars parked on the road,” the ACP said.
