A city court at Patiala House Complex on Wednesday sentenced a Traffic police constable to two years in jail for molesting a woman in 2010. He was also ordered to pay a fine of Rs 13,000.
An accomplice, who was sentenced along with the constable, was told to undergo one-year imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs 2,000.
District Judge H S Sharma said that as the constable,Manoj, was expected to enforce the law and not flout it,he deserved no leniency. One can imagine the plight of a helpless victim at the hands of a person who is none other than a police officer, who is expected to enforce the law and not flout it, he said.
The judge said there has been an increase in reports of police officers flouting the law,and indulging in all kinds of criminal activities. Delhi, being the capital of India,is visited by persons not only from other states but also from abroad. Every day, newspapers publish reports of persons in uniform flouting the law. They are indulging in all kinds of criminal activities, he said.
Manoj was accused of molesting a woman, who was employed with a private insurance company.
According to the prosecution, the woman met Manoj near India Gate in April 2010,and they spoke regarding insurance work and exchanged mobile numbers.
On May 23,2010,Manoj called up the woman insisting that she meet him with regard to some insurance work. The woman agreed and, that evening,Manoj and Sudhir came along in their car.
They took the victim to a secluded spot where they tried to molest her. When she resisted, the two assaulted her.
