In a bid to check and prevent the harassment of women in public transports,Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi has ordered station house officers to conduct surprise checks in at least 20 buses a day. The commissioner passed the order at a recent crime and order review meeting held last week. This is one of the first initiatives taken by the recently appointment police chief to make the city safe for women. Sources said all the SHOs across police stations have been ordered to personally hop into buses passing through their area and also communicate with the women passengers. SHOs have also been asked to maintain a record of buses checked and submit it to their senior officers. The checks will instill confidence among women in the city. The advantage of conducting surprise checks is that the bus staff and the others passengers become aware that a cop might just stop the bus and interact with the women passengers, a police officer said. The commissioner said strict legal action would be taken against those who are found to have harassed women inside buses.
