American journalist,Joel Elliott, who was reportedly beaten up by the police on Tuesday morning for alleged drunken behaviour, nurses his injuries at his apartment in Jangpura Extension. His face is filled with bruises; he has a black eye, stitches on the forehead and more injuries on the chest.

Elliott, who arrived in India in May this year to work as a senior writer for a newsmagazine, was thrashed by the police after allegedly creating a ruckus and breaking into a car in an inebriated state early on Tuesday. No complaint has been filed in the matter.

While Elliott admits that he was drunk,he says his only mistake was to intervene when he saw some cops beating someone up while returning from a friend’s home. “I walked right into the middle of a group of policemen beating up a man. I didn’t realise what was happening.”

At this point,Elliott apparently “mistakenly intervened”.

The police, meanwhile, say Elliott had tried to steal an Ambassador taxi, and later beat up the 68-year-old driver.

Elliott said: “The only people I punched were police officers,in self-defence.” Elliott says he fled after that and slipped into the rear seat of an Ambassador taxi.

Elliott said he was later thrown into a police truck and beaten up by three policemen.

He added that he had met up US Embassy officials, who told him they would take up his case with the police.
