A 29-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stealing a Glock pistol after breaking the window of a car belonging to a Delhi Police officer, officials said on Tuesday.

Amit, a resident of Uttam Nagar and member of a “thak thak” gang operating in North and Northwest Delhi, was arrested by a team of the Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) of South Delhi. The police said a firearm was recovered from him. It turned out to be a service pistol belonging to a Crime Branch officer.

“Thak thak” is a term used by the police for thieves who steal valuables after giving a fake signal of a vehicle’s tyre puncture or petrol leakage. While one member knocks on the car window and distracts the driver, another member quickly picks up valuables once the window is rolled down. They also sometimes steal items by breaking the car’s window.

The theft took place last Thursday, when Sub-Inspector Guman Singh went to have lunch at an eatery in North Delhi’s Maurice Nagar area. His car was parked outside the eatery, and when he returned, he found the window broken and a bag containing his Glock pistol and other valuables missing.

A case was registered at a local police station, and the Crime Branch as well as the Special Staff were alerted about the matter. While the teams were working on the case, the AATS received a tip-off about the movement of suspect Amit in the Madangir area. A raid was conducted at a house, and he was arrested with the stolen pistol.

“He was not aware that the car belonged to a police official, nor did he know that the bag contained a service pistol. During interrogation, he revealed that he was planning to sell the weapon, but before he could do so, our team nabbed him,” a police officer said.

A Glock pistol, which is lighter than the other 9 mm pistols used by Delhi Police, is easier to carry because of its compact size. Manufactured by an Austrian company, the Glock pistol has been used as a service weapon by the force since 2013.
