A day after a portion of the spinal road connecting Terminal 3 to NH-8 caved in,Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said despite numerous letters, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) did not take corrective steps.
The stretch, built over an Airport Line tunnel, sankseveral times in the last three years. The cave-in on Thursday, following a downpour, saw the earth settling as low as 350 mm in some places.
In an official statement,DIAL said: The airport operator has repeatedly notified DMRC to remedy the defective works. DIAL has carried out temporary repair four times on the same stretch. But it is important that the DMCR rectify the problem permanently.
In a letter to DMRC in June,DIAL said: We have been advised to hold the implementation of permanent rectification measures since DMRC is not in agreement with the proposed restoration methodology worked out by DIAL.
In August too,DIAL wrote to DMRC: A precarious caving in of the access road has taken place after the recent rain. DIAL had already carried out temporary repairs three to four times. The continuous settlement of soil at the location of the Metro tunnel reveals poor compaction, which is deteriorating the Ground Access Road… Again,we remind DMRC to take up permanent repair works without delay.
DMRC officials, however, claimed that DIAL has only carried out repairs twice on the stretch.
When compaction is done, the soil settles over the first few monsoons, because of which the top layer is affected. DIAL should come up with a solution to keep the water away from the stretch. We have told them to maintain the road and that we would bear the cost. Had the matter been taken care of in May or June, this situation would never have arisen, the official said.
