Frantic calls to and from senior police officials, teams of different departments rushing to the Parliament, and a group of children waiting outside in confusion — as chaos erupted inside the Parliament Wednesday, the scenes outside were not very different.
While two men — Sagar Sharma (25) from Lucknow and Manoranjan D (33) from Mysuru — jumped from the visitors gallery to the Parliament house floor, another man and a woman — Amol Shinde, 25, and Neelam Azad, 37 — opened colour smoke bombs near the Transport Bhawan and were held. A fifth man, Lalit Jha, is still on the run.
Azad shouted slogans of ‘Bharat Maata ki Jai’, ‘Tanashahi Nahi Chalegi’ and ‘Jai Bheem’.
She, along with Shinde, was subsequently taken to the Parliament Street Police Station, which was then sealed.
Barricades were immediately put up across Parliament, Transport Bhawan, Central Secretariat and Rail Bhawan. All visitors were turned away immediately, including a group of 80-100 school students from Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district who had come to see the new Parliament House.
One of the students told The Indian Express, “We are disappointed as it is our first visit and our school authorities had taken permission for it a week prior.”
Anju Panwar, a teacher who had come with the students said that they had got permission to visit the premises around a week ago but they were sent back owing to the security situation.
Said Panwar, “The students were disappointed after we were told to return…our school is located in Shamli in UP.”
A student said, “I was excited to see the new Parliament building as we got permission to visit it after a long process of approval, first from the district authorities and then from an MP…we were just about to enter the premises when we saw security being increased and people running around…I got scared and we were not allowed to enter.”
Barricades were immediately put up across roads leading to the Parliament, Transport Bhawan, Central Secretariat and Rail Bhawan.
Meanwhile, MPs who were inside and outside the Parliament were escorted to safety by security personnel and their private guards while the student groups were told to return and were sent back in buses.
A forensic and crime team also inspected the spot and collected samples from the park situated in front of the Parliament. Several senior officers, including Director General of NDRF, were called, while teams of Delhi Police’s Security Unit, Special Cell and Crime Branch also visited the spot.
Teams of CRPF personnel, who guard the internal premises of the Parliament, were also deployed in large numbers while the Parliament chamber was scanned by the forensic team for evidence.
