(File Image)Law and Justice Minister Kapil Mishra, in a review meeting with the officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Delhi government’s Animal Husbandry Department on Wednesday, decided to provide comfortable spaces for stray cattle, where they will have access to ample fodder, clean drinking water, and proper sanitation facilities.
Mishra took stock of the efforts being made to provide shelter to street cattle by accommodating them in Gaushalas.
The minister’s office said in a statement that the Delhi government’s initiative is aimed at protecting stray cattle roaming the streets of the capital. “The main objective of this meeting was to provide permanent and humane shelter for cattle in Delhi. This initiative will not only contribute to making Delhi cleaner and safer but will also set an example in the field of animal welfare,” the statement said.
Mishra emphasised that the government’s goal is to remove cattle from the streets and ensure them a safe and dignified life.
In addition, existing cowsheds (gaushalas) will be equipped with modern facilities and regular monitoring will be ensured. The government is also committed to providing all possible support to cowshed operators while holding them accountable and the penal actions that can be taken against negligent operators.
“We are starting from zero when it comes to cattle protection, and under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta, we are committed to ensuring rightful care and respect for stray cattle,” Mishra said, assuring that proper arrangements for cattle fodder would be made and all necessary support would be extended to operators.
Earlier, at a zonal committee meeting of the MCD Keshavpuram ward, decision was taken to seal unauthorised dairies and demolish illegal house constructions linked to its owners and impose penalties.
The decision at the MCD meet was taken a day after a herd of cattle had obstructed Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s convoy for 15 minutes in late March.
The action will also extend to illegal electricity and water connections at the dairy owner’s residence. Meanwhile, Minister Ashish Sood had earlier stated that the Delhi government is working on a “foolproof” law for the protection of cows.
