Five months after a stillborn baby was found in a toilet at a city hospital, police have arrested five persons, including the child’s parents, in connection with the incident. Police said apart from the infant’s parents, the woman’s sister and friends of her partner are among those arrested. The woman’s partner works as a delivery executive for an e-commerce platform.

DCP (Rohini) GS Sidhu said, “A PCR call was made at 12.30-1 am on January 22 after a person went to the hospital’s washroom and found the body in the toilet. The baby was stillborn… We were told that a pregnant woman had come to the hospital with four attendants but left without consulting the doctor. A case under IPC section 318 (concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body) was registered.”

Police said the woman found out she was pregnant much later and she and her partner tried to allegedly terminate the pregnancy by taking pills. But she fell sick, said police. “… She had severe cramps and was rushed to the hospital by her sister, partner and his friends,” said an officer.

On January 21, the woman was admitted to the hospital around 9.30 pm. Police said initially, they had no details of the woman and her attendants.

During investigation, CCTVs from the hospital, nearby markets and areas were checked but the faces of the suspects were not “visible”, said police.

“The investigation team analysed around 250 CCTVs from the area. After a long search, one of the suspects was seen near a medical store (in the footage). The store owner was examined and he told us the suspect purchased medicine and paid for it online. On the basis of details of online transactions, the accused persons were identified and all of them were arrested,” said the DCP.
