New Delhi Railway Station stampede: No sale of platform tickets between 4-11 pm for a week

Earlier on Sunday, a two-member committee formed by the Railways ministry inspected the incident site at the New Delhi Railway Station and secured the CCTV footage for investigation.

Two days after the stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station, time restrictions have been imposed on the sale of platform tickets for a week starting Monday. Tickets will not be sold between 4-11 pm, a Railways official confirmed.

This comes as part of measures to manage crowds at the railway station more effectively. “From the crowd management point of view, it has been decided to stop the sale of platform tickets at New Delhi Railway Station from 4 pm to 11 pm for the next one week,” the Chief Public Relation Officer (CPRO) of the Northern Railway said.

Earlier on Sunday, a two-member committee formed by the Railways ministry inspected the incident site at the New Delhi Railway Station and secured the CCTV footage for investigation.

The inspection was carried out on platform 14 of the railway station which is where the Prayagraj Express was stationed leading to a surge of passengers. People waiting to board the delayed Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani were also present on this platform as well as on platforms 12 and 13.

On Saturday, the stampede, that took place amid the Mahakumbh rush, broke out at the station between 9 pm and 9.20 pm, killing 18 people and injuring several others.

The Indian Express has learnt that, on an average, 7,000 tickets are booked at the New Delhi Railway Station between 6 pm and 8 pm every day. On the day of the incident, however, more than 9,600 general class tickets were booked in the same duration.
